Border Crossings from Azerbaijan to Georgia

For road travel from Baku to Tbilisi, two international passenger crossings are relevant: Red Bridge and Mazımqara–Lagodekhi.

The Azerbaijan State Customs Committee lists both Red Bridge and Mazımqara as international, 24-hour border checkpoints for passenger and vehicle traffic. On the Georgian side, the corresponding checkpoints are Red Bridge and Lagodekhi.

Red Bridge Border Crossing

The Red Bridge, also known as Qırmızı Körpü / Tsiteli Khidi, is located in Azerbaijan’s Gazakh district and is the main road crossing on the direct Baku–Tbilisi corridor.

For passengers travelling directly from Baku to Tbilisi without sightseeing in north-western Azerbaijan, this is normally the more practical route.

After crossing into Georgia, the road continues towards Rustavi and Tbilisi. The Georgian S4 road between Tbilisi and the Red Bridge is approximately 57 km, and the border area is roughly one hour from central Tbilisi in normal road conditions.

Mazımqara–Lagodekhi Border Crossing

The second option is the Mazımqara–Lagodekhi crossing. Mazımqara is located in Balakan district in north-western Azerbaijan, opposite the Lagodekhi checkpoint in Georgia. It is also listed as an international 24-hour passenger and automobile crossing.

This route is useful when the itinerary already includes Sheki, Zagatala or Balakan, or when passengers want to continue through Georgia’s Kakheti region.

After crossing at Lagodekhi, the road to central Tbilisi is much longer than from Red Bridge. The driving distance from Lagodekhi to Tbilisi is approximately 146–150 km, usually around 2 hours or slightly more by car before any sightseeing stops.

Via Red Bridge, the full road journey from Baku to Tbilisi is approximately 570–600 km, depending on the pickup and drop-off points and the exact roads used.

A direct road journey normally requires roughly 8–10 hours of driving and border procedures, but this should be treated as an estimate rather than a guaranteed arrival time. Border formalities, traffic and rest stops can change the total duration.

The Lagodekhi route is longer when used as a Baku–Tbilisi itinerary and is better suited to travellers combining the transfer with Sheki or Kakheti.

Sheki – Lagodekhi Route

Sheki is the most logical major stop when travelling through north-western Azerbaijan towards the Lagodekhi crossing.

This route works particularly well for travellers who want to spend one night in Sheki and continue to Georgia the following day.

From Sheki, the road continues towards Zagatala and Balakan before reaching the Mazımqara border area. Sheki to Balakan is roughly 95–100 km by road, with the border a short additional drive beyond Balakan.

Sighnaghi After Lagodekhi

After entering Georgia through Lagodekhi, passengers can continue through Kakheti and add a visit to Sighnaghi if it is arranged in advance.

Sighnaghi is not a simple roadside rest stop on the fastest Lagodekhi–Tbilisi drive, so it should be treated as a sightseeing detour. The town is known for its historic walls, cobbled streets and views over the Alazani Valley.

Best Time to Travel to Tbilisi

Road travel between Baku and Tbilisi can be arranged throughout the year when the selected border crossing and passenger category are permitted.

Alternative Ways to Travel

There are two important alternatives to a road transfer in 2026: train and direct flight.

Train from Baku to Tbilisi

Passenger railway service between Baku and Tbilisi resumed in May 2026 after a long suspension.

The current service leaves Baku in the evening and arrives in Tbilisi the following morning. The initial 2026 schedule lists departure from Baku at 23:10 and arrival in Tbilisi at 08:41, with a total journey of about 9.5 hours including border and customs procedures. The train stops at Bilajari, Yevlakh, Ganja, Aghstafa, Boyuk Kasik, Gardabani and Tbilisi.

Rail entry and exit between Azerbaijan and Georgia is currently permitted for Azerbaijani citizens and foreign nationals who have visa-free entry rights to Azerbaijan. Travellers who require a visa or fall outside these categories should check their eligibility before buying a ticket.

Flight from Baku to Tbilisi

Direct flights operate between Baku and Tbilisi.

Azerbaijan Airlines currently lists direct Baku–Tbilisi services with a flight duration of approximately 1.2 hours. Airport travel, check-in, security and passport control increase the total door-to-door journey time.

Flying is normally the fastest option for passengers who do not need a road itinerary or stops between the two capitals.
