Shusha is one of Azerbaijan’s most important cultural centres. The city stands on a high plateau surrounded by the mountains and valleys of Karabakh and has long been associated with Azerbaijani music, poetry, architecture and carpet weaving.

The city is associated with many prominent Azerbaijani cultural figures, including composer Uzeyir Hajibeyli, singer Bulbul, poet Khurshidbanu Natavan and poet and statesman Molla Panah Vagif.

About the Baku to Shusha Route

The journey from Baku to Shusha begins by travelling west and southwest from the capital toward the Karabakh region. The final part of the journey connects with the road network leading through Fuzuli toward Shusha.

A major change to this journey came with the opening of the Ahmadbayli–Fuzuli–Shusha highway in July 2025. The new highway is 81.7 kilometres long and connects the main Hajigabul–Horadiz–Aghband corridor with Fuzuli, Khojavend, Khojaly and Shusha. It is approximately 19 kilometres shorter than the older route.

The historic Victory Road remains an alternative route and is approximately 101 kilometres from the Ahmadbayli area to Shusha. It passes through dramatic landscapes and areas connected with the recent history of Karabakh.

Road Conditions

The newer Ahmadbayli–Fuzuli–Shusha highway was built as a modern first-class road. The first section has six lanes and the later mountainous section has four lanes. The project also includes tunnels, bridges and viaducts required by the mountainous terrain approaching Shusha.

The final part of the journey enters higher terrain, where gradients, tunnels and changing weather conditions can influence driving time. Extra care may be necessary during rain, fog or winter weather.
